Recent research on relationship breakups, indicates that it is not just the presence of negative factors that
contribute to them, but the absence of positive factors, that typically protect a couple from a relationship ending.
The 4 factors identified as most protective for a couple’s successful relationship, were:
- Having a rose-coloured view of your partner, e.g. positive illusions
- Being committed to the relationship
- Loving your partner
- Support from your social network, e.g. family and friends
Other factors such as trust and satisfaction are also important, but less so than the above.
So, maintaining those positive illusions about your partner, will enable you to maintain a satisfying and strong relationship! Build up feelings of positive regard, affection and warmth, and make sure you have good social support in times of stress, to safeguard your relationship into the future.
